Nintendo Gamecube
In late 2001, Nintendo released the Gamecube as the successor to the Nintendo 64. Nintendo planned to take a new approach with their new console, opening up development to allow for third parties, thus allowing for a wider offering of games in a bid to tap into the success of rivals Playstation 2 and Xbox.

The success of the GameCube was short lived however, as it just could not outrank the power and diversity of the rivals. Despite opening up development to third parties, Nintendo retained its family-oriented standpoint, and lost out to many successful games because of this. However, the new Nintendo Wii now utilizes many of the games available for the Gamecube, as well as hardware such as the Wavebird controller.
