Sega Dreamcast
In late 1999, Sega released the Dreamcast in attempt to win back their name after the failing Saturn. Released to rival the Nintendo 64 and dominate the market, the Dreamcast enjoyed a limited popularity as sales began to pip the market. Record sales and pre-orders sent the Dreamcast straight to the top, albeit for a short time.
The Sega Dreamcast can claim to be the first truly online gaming console. Earlier systems had offered a limited net capability, but required customers to buy expensive additional hardware. With an in-built modem and system uplinks from various independent companies, the Dreamcast went truly worldwide for the first time.
The Dreamcast would be
overshadowed very quickly however, with the mere announcement of Sony’s
Playstation 2 being enough to draw mass attention away from the Dreamcast, and
upon the release the console suffered crushing setbacks. Although no more games
are being officially released for the system, Sega’s last console remains a cult
favourite amongst gamers worldwide.
