Sega Game Gear
In late 1990, Sega released the handheld console Game Gear in an attempt to overthrow the Nintendo Game Boy, which was dominating the market. The Game Gear was generally perceived as a hand held master system, with many games from that system ported over to the new console.
One major advantage the Game Gear held over the Game Boy was the colour capabilities of the screen, an asset that Sega were unashamed to promote in their ad campaigns. Sega also offered a vast array of games, including system favourite Sonic, and game of the moment Mortal Kombat. Despite this, the Game Gear never performed as well as Sega had hoped, with various complaints arising due to the bulkiness of the console and the poor battery life leading to added expense.
Despite this, the Game Gear
remains a classic cult favourite, with Game Gear emulators being
amongst the most popular around.
