The Best in FPS

One thing the Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, and PC have in common is their love for the First Person Shooter. Arguably the most popular gaming genre of all time, the calibre of FPS continues to rise mirroring the genres popularity. In a rapidly growing genre, it pays to know the best from the rest, so we're here to help!

#5: Far Cry 2

After years of waiting, the Far Cry franchise returns with this impressive offering. Far Cry 2 offers a satisfyingly lengthy single player campaign and impressive multiplayer. Taking a satisfying interest in stealth over out-and-out carnage, Far Cry 2 has you creeping through the undergrowth stalking your enemy in a game that you would be crazy to miss.

#4: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

The immediate realisation with this title is that it takes the warfare into the modern arena for the first time. Single player campaign is a little on the short side, but a solid and enjoyable multiplayer option makes up for this, along with the Call of Duty 4 Engine. Allowing for an impossible degree of accuracy, the engine makes everything you can see react in a natural way. For example, shoot a car in the right spot and it will explode in a gorgeous display of realism. It's this kind of attention to detail that sets this title apart from its peers.

#3: The Orange Box

The Orange Box is perhaps the best purchasing deal in gaming history. The package includes Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2 expansion episodes 1 and 2, online multiplayer mod Team Fortress 2, and a game made from the Half-Life 2 engine called Portal. So that's five games for the price of one- not bad eh?

As is usual for the series, Half-Life 2 follows scientist Gordan Freeman trying to survive after an outbreak of deadly creatures; the results of science experiments gone very wrong. The entire game takes place from a first-person perspective, as our hero tries to put things right and escape the hell-hole all at once.

Team Fortress 2 is simply a multiplayer mod, with different character classes and abilities. The grahpics have been shaken up a bit this time around, going for a more cartoony, cell-shaded look, a trend that seems to be popular in current gaming.

The last game the package features is Portal, a strange concoction of FPS and puzzle game. Meet the portal gun, which you use to teleport objects and yourself between certain areas. You don't have to be a fan of puzzle games to enjoy this, even if it technically is one. It has to be seen to be believed.

#2: Bioshock

Set in a dark and dangerous underworld, Bioshock takes you into nail biting gaming territory, with a story that has been hailed by numerous critics. Bioshock combines all the key gaming elements you could want, from pulse- pounding action, wide exploration and intriguing puzzles. even rarer still, the Playstation Network has managed to secure some exclusive downloadable content. That small miracle cannot go ignored!

#1: Resistance 2

Genre veterans Insomniac bring us this Playstation exclusive title, our top choice here is Resistance 2. Continuing the intriguing premise set by the original, we join an alternate battle between humans and aliens set when World War II should have been.

With the threat returning once again, Resistance 2 throws you into two gratifying campaigns and offers the smoothest most enjoyable online play mode you'll find in any FPS currently on the market.

Keep your eyes peeled for future FPS games, as they just keep getting better and better!
